Here are few cool tips to get you started with making your own clown costumes:

What's great about making your own clown is that you can use practically anything. The wilder you go, the better it'll work. You can usually pull off making an impressive clown with items you've got in your closet, attic, stashed in the garage, etc.

A visit to the local thrift store will also provide you with some of the best clown accessories. You can also get great ideas from existing costumes - here's a HUGE gallery of clown costumes and accessories!

Here's a cool selection of homemade clowns:

Whatever is oversized - works! Pants, vests, glasses, shoes, boxer shorts, pajamas, shirts, bright ties, overalls, etc. The more they're colorful - the better. You can also use fuzzy slippers, hats, extra short pants, bow ties, mismatched shoes and socks, rope belts, ruffles, suspenders, gloves, and anything else that brings a smile to your face.

You can put a pillow in your pants to make a big tummy or bum. And also sew big buttons or colorful patches onto old clothes.

On your head you can put any sort of wig or hat, mop top, pony tails, yarn, headband, flowers, big bow scarf, feathers, and again - anything goes.

For a clown collar, start with a 7x36'' piece of nylon tulle (available at fabric stores). Thread string through the mesh along one long edge, gathering the collar as you go. Then tie the string ends into a bow behind the neck.

There are generally three types of clown costumes:

A "white-face" clown looks like a puppet with a happy, painted face, big red nose, and large exaggerated mouth.

A "character" clown is dressed to look like a character, such as a policeman, fireman, cowboy, pirate, nurse, baseball player, ballerina, etc.

The "Auguste" clown are usually sad-faced in pink, red, and black make up.

Make Up and Accessories for Clown Costumes

Make up for your clown costumes is essential. HERE is an AWESOME selection of make up kits with lots of clown faces to give you ideas for your own clown costumes.

If you want to make your own make up, take a look at this cool face paint recipe and make up tips. Or, use make up that's normally available at home like lipstick, eye shadow crayons, eye liner pencil, rouge, and powder.

Remember to put cold cream or baby oil on the face before applying the make up to help protect the skin and make it easier to remove. You should also powder after applying white and between any colors that touch each other.

*Clown face: With a damp sponge, apply white face paint to the entire face, including eyebrows, ears and neck. Use a small makeup brush to paint the upper and lower eyelids white.

Once the base coat dries (usually takes a few minutes), brush on the facial features:

*Nose: A round red circle around the tip of the nose is a "classic" for clown costumes. You can also use a red hollow ball for the nose by cutting a slot in the ball so that it fits comfortably over the nose.

*Mouth: You can paint the top lip white and draw your own large red smiling lips, or make a smiling face that reaches all the way to the middle of the cheeks. You can also accentuate the mouth with black liner.

*Eyes: You can paint any colored shape (such as a blue star or diamond) to accentuate the eyes.

*Eyebrows: Paint thin and pointy red eyebrows about an inch above the real ones. You can also go for heavy dark eyebrows.

*Cheeks: Draw pink circles on either cheek.

Making your own clown costume is lots of fun, so remember to let your creativity go wild and you're sure to come up with the coolest clown ever!

Good Luck!
