- The "Golden Age of Piracy" (the time where pirates were most common in the Caribbean) was between around 1650 and 1730.
- Today the word "Pirate" is spelled with an 'i' after the 'P', but in the Golden Age of Piracy, spelling was a haphazard kind of thing, and the word was often spelled with a 'y'. So back then it was more common to spell the word as "Pyrate".
- Pirates believed that if they wore earrings it would improve their eyesight.
- There are known records that many pirates would place a portion of any captured money into a central fund that was then used to compensate crew injuries. Some of the lists showed payments of 600 pieces for the loss of a leg (around $150,000 in today's currency), or 100 pieces for the loss of an eye (around $27,000).
