Invitations
There are a whole lot of original dinosaur invitation ideas - here's my favorite: The flip-top broken dinosaur egg invitation...
Cut TWO identical egg-shaped pieces of cardboard stock paper or construction paper. Take one piece and cut it in half in a zigzag pattern. (You've just created the top and bottom halves of a broken egg.) Glue the bottom half exactly over the uncut oval cardboard.
On the top part of the uncut cardboard, write: "BREAKING NEWS! Dinosaurs discovered in (your hometown)!! Come and join in on the new discovery at our cave (address) - at (time). Please don't be extinct!! RSVP to prehistoric parents (phone #)." (You can also finish each kid's name with "-osaurus".)
Now, here's the coolest part! Take the top half of the cardboard you cut before and use a brass fastener to connect it over what you've just written. The fastener allows the top part (that's hiding the written part) to open upwards as if the egg is breaking.
Decorate the egg with pictures or drawings of dinosaurs and other colorful decorations. And you've got the coolest dinosaur birthday party invitation!
If you don't feel like doing all that work for a dinosaur birthday party invitation, you can place the invitations inside a dinosaur (Easter) egg or cut out a dinosaur footprint and decorate it.

Decorations
An excellent way to start your dinosaur birthday party decorating is by finding some pictures and clipart that'll give your imagination an artistic boost. (Here's my hand-picked selection of great dinosaur pictures coloring pages, images and more to get you started...)
This ready-made personalized dinosaur birthday party banner is excellent to hang in a prominent area of the party.
Cut out dinosaur footprints from brown paper and place them all over the house or yard. You can also have them lead up to your doorstep, or even use colored chalk to draw monster-size footprints. Get the whole family to smudge their hand and footprints on paper and hang it up all over the house.
Inflate a bunch of dinosaur-shaped balloons, and for ambience play some dinosaur music (yes, there are really cool CDs like DinoRock... ).
|
You can also create a cardboard Jurassic Park entrance.
To get an idea, take a look at this pre-made awesome dinosaur entrance design that you can make on your own out of cardboard.
To top off the prehistoric effect, cut out a dinosaur standee (just like this ominous T-Rex standee...) and photograph the kids with them for cool thank you cards to send off after the party. |
It's also a great idea to sprinkle a bunch of miniature dinosaurs in every corner of the house or yard and hang dinosaur gliders from the ceiling.

Ice-Breaker Activities
*Dino Coloring: There's lots of dino coloring you can keep the kids busy with. For starters you can hand out these inexpensive Dino posters for the kids to color.
*Cave Painting: Create a cave out of refrigerator or furniture boxes! Just open up the boxes and stand them up so that you are actually making a closed space. In the cave, place all sorts of markers, crayons and other art supplies so that when the kids come they can decorate the cave. (This'll help with the party decoration and add prehistoric ambience to the room!!).
You can also have the kids mark their handprints on pieces of paper and pin them up all around your cave and house. If you don't want to use boxes you can tape brown shipping paper on one wall of the room where the party will be taking place. Kids just LOVE to draw on walls and this is one of the funnest dinosaur birthday party activities!

Dinosaur Birthday Party Food
Dino Cakes:
|
Take a look at our very own dinosaur birthday cake ideas, including reader-submitted photos and how-to tips... |
Another dinosaur birthday party cake that'll have the kids blowing their tops off is the volcano cake. There a many ways to create a volcano shaped cake out of different-shaped pans, like a bundt pan. After you bake them and create the mountain shape, cut a hole in the center. Then use chocolate frosting to sculpt the volcano and place vanilla pudding (tinted red) in the hole, oozing out to look like an eruption. By crumbling Oreo cookies you can get the effect of dirt, blue frosting for water and green frosting for grass. You can also put plastic dinosaurs and trees around the bottom of the volcano.
Here's another really cool dinosaur birthday party cake recipe...
Dinosaur Birthday Party Food
Here are some ideas for your dinosaur birthday party "carnivore and herbivore cuisine". Put small signs on each just to make sure everyone understands that they are munching on real Jurassic foods... Also remember to decorate the all-important food table with large rocks, green plants and all sorts of other miniature dinosaur paraphernalia.
*PB&J-asaurus sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into the shape of dinosaurs using dinosaur cookie cutters
*Dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets (available at the frozen food section of some of the large supermarkets)
*Dinosaur Bones (pretzel sticks)
*Pasta-Raptor Salad (pasta salad)
*Chicken wings for the meat eaters and a vegetable tray for the plant eaters.
*Bronto bites (BBQ meatballs)
*Brontosaurus Burgers
*Dino Dogs
*Tyrannosaurus Mex-Dip with Fossil Fries (potato chips)
*Hot lava (chili) and rocks (cornbread)
*Dino eggs: Hard-boil some eggs. After they cool, gently crack the shell all over, but don't remove it. Place the cracked eggs in a small bowl containing 3 cups of cool water and kool-aid mix (this is what gives the color). Then cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator overnight. On the day of the party, remove the eggshells and lo and behold, the egg looks like it has cracks all over it!
Dinosaur Birthday Party Drinks:
*Red punch as "Lava" Juice (you can also swirl in some orange sherbet into the punch for a thicker effect)
*Green soda pop (or 7up with green food coloring) as "Swamp water"
Tip: Add pop-rocks to the "Swamp Water" just as you serve to create an awesome bubbling effect!
Dinosaur Birthday Party Treats:
*Lava Jell-O (red jell-o) and Swamp water Jell-o (green jell-o) (Tip: You can place one well-washed plastic dinosaur into the Jell-o mix before letting it set-one that's small enough to fit into a dessert bowl, but large enough not to be a choking hazard.)
*Ice Age popsicles: Purchase popsicle molds where you buy the sticks seperately (you can also use small paper cups in which you pour in the juice, cover with plastic wrap, poke craft wooden sticks through the plastic for popsicle handles, then when the popsicles are frozen peel of the paper). Fill the molds with any kind of juice (preferrebly something light colored like lemonade) and add a few dinosuar gummies or candies to each popsicle and freeze overnight.
*Fruit-a-saurus salad (fruit salad)
*Homemade dinosaur cookies
*Dino Jelly Pops
